Privacy Policy

Last updated: [DATE]

This Privacy Policy explains how [YOUR LEGAL NAME OR COMPANY] ("Lantern," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and shares information when you use the Lantern mobile app (the "App").

Please read this carefully. Lantern lets you write personal religious reflections (a journal) and study Scripture. Some of the information you provide reveals your religious beliefs, which is treated as sensitive personal data. We describe below how we handle it.

By using the App you agree to this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the App.

1. Who we are

The App is provided by [YOUR LEGAL NAME OR COMPANY], located at [ADDRESS, if required]. For privacy questions, contact us at [privacy@yourdomain.com].

2. Information we collect

Information you provide

Information collected automatically

Information we do not collect

3. How we use your information

We use the information above to:

4. The AI Study companion

When you ask the AI Study companion a question, the App sends your question, the short recent conversation, and the text of the passage you are studying to our AI provider, Anthropic (Claude), through our backend, which returns a response. We use this only to generate your answer.

The AI companion can be wrong or incomplete and is not a substitute for professional, medical, legal, or pastoral advice.

5. Sensitive personal data (your journal & beliefs)

Your journal entries, and your use of a Bible study app generally, may reveal information about your religious or philosophical beliefs, which is considered sensitive personal data under laws such as the GDPR.

6. How we share information

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with service providers ("subprocessors") that help us run the App, under contracts that limit their use of it:

Provider Purpose Data involved
Supabase Authentication, database, hosting Account info, journal, plans, streaks
Anthropic AI Study companion Study questions + the passage you're viewing
RevenueCat Subscription management Subscription status, purchase metadata
Apple / Google Sign-in and payment processing Auth identifiers, payment (handled by them)
PostHog Product analytics Usage events + coarse metadata (no journal/Scripture/Study text)
Sentry Crash & error monitoring Diagnostic / crash data

We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect our rights or users' safety, or in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets (you will be notified of any such change affecting your data).

7. Data retention

We keep your account information and content for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account (see Section 8), we delete your account and associated data — including journal entries, streaks, and plan progress — from our active systems. Some information may persist briefly in backups or where we are required to retain it by law, after which it is deleted.

8. Your rights and choices

We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights.

9. Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including encryption in transit, encryption at rest, and per-user access controls so that one user cannot read another user's data. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, however, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

10. Children's privacy

The App is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your country). While Lantern includes Bible content written for families to read together, accounts and journals are intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

11. International users and data transfers

We are based in [COUNTRY] and our providers may process data in the United States and other countries. If you use the App from outside these countries, your information may be transferred to and processed in a country with different data-protection laws. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards (such as Standard Contractual Clauses) for such transfers.

12. Changes to this Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above and, for material changes, provide a more prominent notice. Your continued use of the App after an update means you accept the revised Policy.
